Nona Karapetyan “Piano is my best friend”

By playing piano it is important to really feel the music you're playing. Nona plays from her heart as well as her fingers. She is emotionally connected to the notes which is playing in like manner trying to be a great performer. To put it differently, she tries to make every sounds that come from every note more important. Nona Karapetyan was born in Yerevan, Armenia, but grew up in Czech Republic. In her repertoire lot of diversity compositions.

ML&L - Welcome in May. Life, Nona. When and why did you start playing piano?

Nona - I started playing piano maybe at the age of 5 or 6 – I cannot remember exactly.

ML&L - Who was your first teacher?

Nona - Of course my Mother. She received her degree in choral conducting in University of Music and many years work in her profession. Also she was playing Piano instrumental accompaniment for Choirs in Music School and gave private piano lessons for students. Remember when we was child, she learned my sister and me how to play, how to sing, dance, and every day we more and more like piano. My mother is a force, a talented teacher who gave every nuance of what she had. My sister and me inherit talents from our mother. Indeed music school too. This year will be my music graduate program.

ML&L - What’s your favorite thing about playing the piano?

Nona - I love piano the day I began having the connection with the instrument.

ML&L - Which famous composers do you admire?

Nona - Frederic Chopin, Aram Khachaturian, Arno Babajanian, Sergei Rachmaninoff.

ML&L - People need to be educated about classical music, before they can really appreciate it?

Nona - Yes, it is true.

ML&L - Favorite non-classical musicians ?

Nona - Maksim Mrvica, Hans Zimmer, Jarrod Radnich

ML&L - Do you perform in public? Describe those occasions? Concerts,events?

Nona - It's important to get used to playing in public. I did it in different places from performing in front of a small group up to performing in the big concerts, events.

ML&L - How do you handle mistakes during a performance?

Nona - Improvisation only. Sure, improvisation cannot be completely spontaneous, it must build on a vocabulary of musical devices. Thanks my teachers, and me that I have this base. There are no wrong notes in improvisation, all is freedom!

ML&L - How often and for how long do you practice?

Nona - I do it every day . No matter how hard and frustrating it seems, I always persevere and never give up.

ML&L - What other instruments do you play now?

Nona - I am beginning playing Guitar and trying to learn to play beautiful music. I practice 2-3 hours each day. Music is my passion and guitar is my relaxation.

ML&L - Do you have any more advice for younger pianists on how best to approach starting their careers?

Nona - I am still rather too young to be giving such advice!
