From Pink’s 'What about us' to Davina Michelle’s 'Relove'.

ML&L - What would you like people to know about your music career?

Davina - I’m a singer and I work closely with a production team called the Subbass Music Group. We write and create our own songs and we make covers of hit-songs and upload one every Monday to my YouTube Channel.


ML&L - Who do you consider to be your most significant musical influencer?

Davina - Definitely Beyoncé. Since I was little I have been listening to her music and voice and my goal was to just as skilled as she is.


ML&L - What made you decide to do cover songs? 

Davina - At first, I just wanted to make originals, but when you’re just starting a music career without a label or a lot of money, it can be very hard to get your music to the people. So we decided to start a YouTube account and cover songs to gain a little fanbase that could help us promote my music. It completely got out of hand, haha! 


ML&L - How do you choose which songs to perform next for your channel?

Davina - We first check the global top 50 playlist on Spotify, because these are the songs that are searched for the most. From that list I choose a song that I enjoy and that fits my voice.

ML&L - What inspired you to start songwriting?

Davina - I love songs with lyrics that I can relate to, songs that make me feel something. So by putting my own story on paper, I try to move people who can relate to the same things I have seen or been through. 


ML&L - How long does it usually take you to write a song?

Davina - It takes me quite long actually. One song I’ve written has taken me 3 months, because I just couldn’t find the right words. I don’t write songs in one sitting. I often write a few lines that come up to me and a week later I’m getting some groceries and some ideas just pop up in my head that I have to write down immediately or else I’ll forget. 


ML&L - What is the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in the music industry?

Davina - I didn’t have many obstacles so far, but the hardest thing probably was accepting people’s opinions. Negative comments did really affect me but I’m learning to accept that not everybody has to like what I’m doing as long as my fans and me do.


ML&L - Tell us the backstory of your new song "Relove".

Davina - When we wrote Relove, we wanted to react on the lyrics of ‘What about us’. P!nk sang about feeling unwanted and forgotten. Relove is about reuniting people. If you’re feeling unloved or invisible, it’s time to rewind and go back to the days you felt great with someone.

ML&L - What's the message you’re trying to bring with your songs?

Davina - It depends on what song. My first single ‘Pillow’ was meant as a true summer-jam to give people the ‘wild and free’ feeling like only summer can. With ‘Relove’ I wanted people to get back to the base of love together.


ML&L - What would you like people to feel when they listen to your music?

Davina - I don’t want people to feel a certain way. I want everybody to interpreted the lyrics differently according to their personal experiences or situation.


ML&L - “Relove” is your most recent single. What does the song mean to you?

Davina - For me, Relove is about losing contact with my best friend for a while, because I was busy, mainly with myself. A friend of mine immediately thought about his ex girlfriend, with whom he’s luckily together again. The lyrics can be interpreted in so many different ways. I think everyone can relate somehow. A situation where you regret what has happened. It’s never too late to fix it.


ML&L - Do you have any advice for aspiring singers?

Davina - Just keep on going! Don’t let negative comments take you down!

ML&L - Are there any upcoming collaborations we can look forward to?

Davina - We are looking for an artist to be doing a collaboration with on YouTube, but nothing is scheduled yet !


ML&L - What are your plans ahead?

Davina - We will keep uploading covers to YouTube, but 2018 will be all about writing and producing new music with my team and eventually dropping an album.
