Interview with YouTube Cover Artist, aspiring singer Ashleen Pratap.

ML&L - How did you get your start in music?

Ashleen - I’ve always loved to sing since I was little, but I was too shy to sing in front of people! So I would always sing in my bedroom and in the shower. Then about 3-4 years ago I posted my first cover on my YouTube page for a singing contest. Then I started posting covers more regularly and now every week on my Instagram page and YouTube Channel. I started performing at open mics a few months ago and love the feeling of performing and have gained a lot of confidence in doing so!


ML&L - What made you decide to do cover songs?

Ashleen - I do covers songs because I feel there are so many talented artists out there that put together amazing lyrics and melodies that need to be showcased! I would like to follow in their path and start writing and making my own music as well very soon!


ML&L - How do you choose which songs to perform next for your channel?

Ashleen - I choose every song I cover very carefully. My thought process behind it is if it has a positive/powerful message, I can relate to it and I’m passionate about it, then I will cover it! Songs such as Beautiful by Christina Aguilera, Fight song by Rachel Platten and Kill 'Em with Kindness by Selena Gomez are the themes of messages I want to put out there!

ML&L - Which artist would you like to collaborate with?

Ashleen - I would love to collaborate with Taylor Swift. I think she is so amazing at what she does and is a lyrical genius. I would love to see the process she goes through when writing lyrics and making music and just learn from her! She is so talented!


ML&L - Do you have a particular process when it comes to covers?

Ashleen - Yes! I pick the song I want to cover the week of and go over the lyrics. Then I record my vocals and then film myself singing! This process of recording, memorizing the lyrics and getting the best take takes a few hours, but I love it.


ML&L - What advice would you give to someone who is aspiring to enter the music industry?

Ashleen - I am trying to enter the music industry myself! But from what I have learned so far, I would say putting yourself out there and taking every opportunity that comes your way whether it be big or small!  Also that social media is a great platform and an amazing way to get your voice and music out there! Use it!

ML&L - What do you like most about performing?

Ashleen - I love making people feel something when I sing. That is my most favorite part of performing!


ML&L - What are your plans ahead?

Ashleen - I want to start making my own music and make an album that inspires others. I hope to start performing at larger venues with larger crowds, getting more exposure in the music industry, start collaborating with more artists/producers/creators and getting my music and voice out there. Also I hope to get signed by a record label and go on tour! Oh and make it to the Grammys. That is my biggest dream!


ML&L - Any last words?

Ashleen - I believe everyone has a purpose and we were all put on this earth to find ours. I feel my purpose is to spread positivity through my voice and inspire others through my music!

Singer Ashleen Pratap Shares Some Fun Facts About Herself

-I'm Canadian eh!
-I love dancing and I am part of an all women’s heel training dance group called Army of Sass!
-I am learning how to play the piano right now and will be playing in a festival in May!
-I love performing at open mics and have taught myself a few songs on the guitar: Stand by me, Kill em’ with kindness and Figures.
-I make really tasty sugar cookies.
-My favorite movie of all time is Forest Gump!
-I would love to see Eminem perform live in concert, its on my bucket list!
